The Kindness of Color, a true story of perseverance, unity, and hope.

Come hear how our guest's inspirational story of hope and perseverance changed history for all school-aged children!

A SALON is a gathering of men and women who wish to increase their knowledge through stimulating conversation.

To that end, we are excited to host author, Janice Munemitsu, as she recounts her family's true story in her first book entitled, The Kindness of Color. Come learn how two immigrant families faced challenges during WWII in Southern California. Unexpectedly, their paths intertwine, ultimately paving the way for the landmark court case, Mendez, et al v. Westminster and the desegregation of California public schools, seven years before Brown v. Board of Education. History happened right here in Orange County, making California the first state in the union to allow children of all races to attend public school. In the face of adversity, the families were sustained by the simple yet harrowing acts of kindness extended to them by friends and strangers as they navigated their difficult journeys toward justice.

Author Janice Munemitsu is a Japanese American Sansei (third-generation.) A native of Orange County, California, Janice worked on the family farm from age five through high school. Her family name, Munemitsu, 宗 光, means source of light in kanji. She hopes this book will be a source of light and hope, and will inspire us all to cultivate increasing kindness towards one another. The Kindness of Color is her first book.
